IIT Delhi establishes centre to find solutions for air pollution

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi on 16 Febraury inaugurated a Centre of Excellence for Research on Clean Air (CERCA) to help scholars devise solutions to fight air pollution and promote scientific research in the field.

It has been set up with the help of institute's alumnus Arun Duggal, who worked for the most part of his career as a banker at Bank of America and a former chairman of Shriram Capital. It was inaugurated by Delhi Lt. Governor Anil Baijal.

Formation of CERCA

As a response to the air pollution quasi-emergency, IIT Delhi has set up the Center of Excellence for Research on Clean Air (CERCA). The mission of CERCA is to promote scientific research on clean air issues and provide sustainable solutions to the problem of air pollution. CERCA was inaugurated at IIT Delhi on 16th February 2018 by the Honorable Lt Governor of Delhi, Shri Anil Baijal and has been set up with the help of Shri Arun Duggal who has previously worked with Bank of America as a banker, and is also a former chairman of Shriram Capital.

AIMS and OBJECTIVES

CERCA aims to become a nodal centre for resource, research and action in the area of clean air in India in general, and Delhi in particular. The key objectives of CERCA include:

  • To enhance the public understanding and participation in promoting clean air initiatives
  • To provide scientific, actionable information to policy makers (Government), industry and civil society on the effectiveness of various pollution management programmes.
  • To engage faculty members at IIT Delhi for multidisciplinary research focused on studying and resolving clean air issues in Delhi-NCR and India.

MISSION

In a nutshell, the mission of CERCA is to promote scientific research, analysis and action on Clean Air issues and provide actionable information for air quality improvement to the Government, Industry and to the Citizens at large.

APPROACH

While CERCA is a center of excellence hosted at an institution known for its high quality research and education, the approach of CERCA will combine the best practices from the entire ecosystem. It will include:

  • Multidisciplinary research projects in collaboration with other institutions in India and overseas on Ambient Air Quality and Indoor Air Quality.
  • Working with and providing scientific information to policy makers at Government of India, State governments and Municipal Authorities and provide scientific feedback on effectiveness of various air pollution management programs.
  • Help enhance public understanding and participation in promoting Clean Air initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Industry on Clean Air equipment and emission reduction initiatives and Indoor Air Quality Improvement.

In other words, CERCA will function as thinktank and action centre hosted at and drawing from the research expertise available at IIT Delhi and working for clean air in Delhi, India and beyond, as appropriate.
